Well, here we are. March 2013. Spring is coming. Living in Ohio, you never know what the weather will be like this time of year. We hit 60 degrees for the first time this year. After being cooped up in the house for the last few weeks, we took advantage of the great weather.
Saturday we headed out to Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and Magee Marsh which is a part of the Black Swamp here in Ohio. Lots of eagles. It was AWESOME!!!!! We had 3 fly in close and 1 landed in a tree nearby. I think it was a female being chased by 2 males. She was not happy and proceeded to let the 2 males know about it. Amazing to be able to stand there and witness the courting process. This was followed by a female swooping in close to grab some reeds for nest building. She was within 100 yards. These birds are huge and magnificent. We also ended up in the middle of a red-wing black bird migration. Well over 1000 blackbirds were in the trees while we walked through the reserve. Loud. Very, very loud!
Sunday we tried to stay close to home and went out to Point Place. We started out on the Ottawa River Interpretive Trail near the dump. Not much action thee. Next we drove over to Cullen Park. The ice has moved out of the bay and there were gulls and ducks. Ring billed gulls were plentiful and after some hiking and long lens shooting, it would appear that we had lesser scaups on the bay with the gulls. A new life bird for us, so a great end to a great weekend.
Here are some pics. Not as good as I would like, but I am going to share them just the same. Have a great week!
