October Weekend

Hello. Well, fall is here, but you wouldn't know it by the weather this weekend. It was a beautiful two days here in Northern California.

The leaves have started falling, but the dahlia's are still blooming.

I stopped by the nursery on Saturday, and found that they had mums on sale. The garden has looked particularly ugly this year, so I thought I would brighten it up by adding some fall color.

Along with the falling leaves comes some returning friends to the neighborhood. All I have to do is sit in the family room, and I can hear our visitors outside in the trees.

Northern flickers, while very shy, are so lovely to look at.

And the European Starlings, here in their winter plumage, are so loud and annoying.

Luckily, my favorites, the Anna's hummingbirds do not migrate and are always buzzing through the backyard.

And if you listen carefully you just might find a Cooper's Hawk looking for it's next meal.

I hope everyone has a great week. See ya soon!

I want candy!

Hello there! From a quick glance at the calender I see that it's almost October and the Holiday's are rapidly approaching. I thought I would try and get a jump start on my candy making by trying out some new recipes over the weekend.

This first recipe we tried is from the joy of baking web site. It is for making marshmallows. The whole process is fairly simple, and just requires a few ingredients. The hardest part of making marshmallows is transferring the mallow to the pan to let it set up. Talk about sticky!!

We made vanilla flavored this time, but lemon or almond might be a tasty change next time. Everyone is loving the marshmallows!

Next up, I had a recipe I have been wanting to try for a while. It's for cake pops. Or a better name might be cake on a stick. I have seen this recipe on several website's, but used this one from ehow. This recipe requires baking a cake and letting it cool, so there is some time involved in making these. However, they are well worth the wait. It makes about 40 pops, and I had little bags to wrap each one with.

Not sure I will make these again. For the amount of time it takes, making and serving a cake the old fashioned way is easier. Still they are tasty. That's cake and frosting inside with pure chocolate around the outside.

My last recipe was supposed to be for caramel. I, however, forgot to get some whipping cream at the store and by the time I was ready to make these, it was dinner time and blah, blah, blah. You get the idea. Maybe I'll make the caramel this weekend.

The girls from The Tattered House will be on the road to Nipomo,Ca for the Remnants of the Past show along with Rachel Ashwell of Shabby Chic. This is another great show, so if you can make it to the San Luis Obispo area this weekend, check it out!

Have a great week! Peace!!!

Chalk It Up to Labor Day

Today, the Vintage Daughter and I went downtown to Fremont Park to check out the Chalk It Up Festival . Held every year for the last 20 years, the festival is a fund raiser for children's art education in the Sacramento area. There was live music and food, as well as the artists doing the drawings on the sidewalk surrounding the park. With blue sky's and temps in the low 90's it was a perfect way to spend a couple hours.

Don't forget the Roseville Antique Market is coming up in 2 weeks on Sunday September 19th .
